Project description

Iraq's oil and gas sector lacks a national methane inventory and structured mitigation pathway to meet Global Methane Pledge commitments. Ministries require actionable guidance on monitoring, reporting, and verification to operationalise emission reductions.

Carbon Limits partners with Clean Air Task Force (CATF), the UN Environment Programme's International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) to develop Iraq's national methane inventory using the CoMAT tool and deliver a sector-specific mitigation assessment.

The consortium provides MRV guidance, mitigation cost estimates, and policy recommendations aligned with international best practices. The work equips Iraq's Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Oil with an emissions baseline and implementation roadmap for methane abatement in oil and gas operations. It supports national governments and development partners advancing methane mitigation in hydrocarbon-producing contexts.
