Training description

This module introduces satellite technologies used to monitor gas flaring and explains how flaring data can support methane mitigation and regulatory oversight.

Content: Participants will learn how flaring satellites detect heat and light emissions from flares, how flare volumes are estimated from satellite observations, and how these approaches differ from methane-detection satellites. The module explores the sources of uncertainty in satellite-derived flaring estimates and explains why differences often exist between satellite observations and reported flaring volumes. Through practical examples and country case studies, participants will learn how to interpret satellite-based flaring data, understand its strengths and limitations, and assess how it can be used alongside reported data to improve decision-making, emissions tracking, and flare reduction strategies.

Format: This module can be delivered in-person or virtually.
