Training description

Training description: Gain a comprehensive understanding of how satellite data can support methane and flaring emissions management through this complete five-module training programme.

Content: Participants start with the current landscape of methane-monitoring satellites. They then learn to use satellite data to improve inventories, trace detections to their sources, identify ways to reduce emissions and analyse flaring. Technical content, practical examples from the oil and gas sector and country case studies prepare participants to interpret satellite observations, compare them with reported data and turn detections into mitigation action.

The programme covers:

Module 1 – Methane Satellites Landscape

Module 2 – Satellites for Methane Inventory Improvement

Module 3 – Satellites for Methane Emission Detection

Module 4 – Satellites for Methane Mitigation

Module 5 – Satellites for Flaring Analysis and Regulatory Insight

Learning outcomes: By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:

  • Explain what methane satellites can and cannot detect, including the difference between area flux mappers and point-source imagers.
  • Use satellite observations alongside bottom-up inventories to improve emissions estimates, and explain why the two often differ.
  • Apply a structured method to move from a satellite detection to a probable emission source.
  • Identify ways to reduce emissions from common sources such as flares, pipelines and storage tanks, and plan the follow-up needed to confirm results.
  • Interpret satellite-based flaring data and assess how it can be used alongside reported volumes to support regulatory oversight.

Who is this for: Oil and gas operators, national oil companies, regulators, government agencies, policymakers, data analysts, consultants and researchers working on methane and flaring.

Format: Five 90-minute interactive modules led by experts, delivered virtually or in person, with practical examples, case studies, discussion and Q&A.

Languages: English and Russian.
