Support to Nigerian stakeholders on methane emissions for the oil and gas sector
Project description
Methane management has become an urgent priority for Nigeria’s oil and gas sector as international partners, investors, and regulators increasingly expect accurate measurement, reporting, and mitigation. In this context, NNPC and private operators face the challenge of developing reliable methane inventories and meeting emerging standards such as OGMP 2.0, despite limited technical capacity and fragmented support. To address these needs, EDF and Africa Practice, with support from Carbon Limits, launched a 12‑month, technical assistance program designed to build strong foundational capabilities across the sector. The program delivers comprehensive training, develops a full methane emissions inventory for NNPC, supports OGMP 2.0 alignment, and guides mitigation planning and international engagement, while coordinating with other organizations to ensure coherence and avoid duplication. Through this work, the initiative is enabling operators to strengthen measurement and reporting practices, advance toward complete inventory development, and prepare targeted mitigation strategies that will support long‑term methane reduction efforts across Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.
