Project description

Carbon Limits evaluated the effectiveness of current EU policies on methane abatement and identified opportunities for greater methane emission reductions across the energy (oil, natural gas, biogas, and coal), agriculture, and waste sectors. This was done by estimating trajectories in 2 scenarios: (1) best available technologies (BAT) and techniques were implemented, and a projected trajectory was created for this scenario; and (2) current policy scenario where we assessed key methane and greenhouse gas reduction policies at the EU level and National Energy and Climate Plans (NECP) and Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) of European countries.

Key Objectives:

  • Assess methane emissions: provide an overview of methane emissions from EU countries, covering oil, gas, coal, agriculture, waste, and major energy exporters.
  • Review and analyze the scope and impact of EU and national policies.
  • Quantify the methane reduction achievable with BATs and compare it to reductions expected under current legislation.
  • Highlight policy gaps and the potential for regulatory improvements to ensure the EU meets its climate targets.
