Model to Calculate Methane Emissions from Manure Management

Project description

Manure management in Norway is a source of emissions to air of greenhouse gases (GHGs), specifically methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), in addition to other nitrogen species such as ammonia (NH3), nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen (in the form of N2). In order to comply with The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Norway needs to prepare and submit a National Inventory Report (NIR) on a yearly basis, which needs to include emissions from the agricultural sector including from manure management. Following on from previous work developing a nitrogen model for manure management in Norway, Carbon Limits has been working with Miljødirektoratet (Norwegian Environment Agency) and SSB, the Norwegian Statistics Bureau, to develop a revised methodology and accompanying model for calculating the agricultural methane emissions to atmosphere from farm level manure management systems.
