Future Proofing Greenhouse Gas MRV Systems – Assessing Compatibility with International Frameworks
Project description
The project assesses the compatibility of emerging national greenhouse gas Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) systems with key international MRV frameworks, including the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), ISO 14067, the GHG Protocol, the Aluminium Protocol, and the Responsible Steel Standard. The objective is to provide policymakers with a structured analysis of how selected national MRV systems align with international requirements, identify gaps and challenges, and offer practical recommendations to enhance interoperability and minimize compliance costs for exporters. The assessment focuses on five priority jurisdictions – Guangdong (China), India, Mexico, South Africa, and Türkiye – chosen for their relevance to global carbon markets and exposure to EU CBAM. The project’s findings are intended to support countries in future-proofing their MRV systems, facilitating international trade, and meeting evolving climate policy demands.
