Project description

As part of the SYRIUS Program, winner of the ZIBaC call for projects (Low Carbon Industrial Zones) managed by ADEME for the State, Piicto, Air Liquide, ArcelorMittal Méditerranée, CMA-CGM, Elengy, Engie, Esso, Eurovia, EveRé, GRTgaz, Imerys Aluminates, Ineos Chemicals Lavéra, Lafarge, LyondellBasell Berre, LyondellBasell Fos, Naphtachimie, Petroineos Manufacturing France SAS, SPSE and Vicat have launched a pre-feasibility study of capture, transport and geological storage of CO2 (CCS) from emissions from the industrial areas of the Fos- Etang de Berre – Rhône Valley ZIP.

This study constitutes study 26 of the SYRIUS program (Synergies Régénératives IndUstrielles Sud). Piloted by the PIICTO association and co-piloted with its animation partners - Capenergies, Novachim, Port de Marseille Fos, Aix-Marseille Provence Metropolis and South Region -, the SYRIUS program, which covers the industrial-port territory of the “Fos Zone – Étang-de-Berre – Gardanne Basin” and which mobilizes more than 40 industrial and transport players, is among the first national winners of the ZIBaC call for projects, which is part of the national acceleration strategy of the decarbonization of the industry of France 2030. The SYRIUS program should make it possible to ultimately reduce significantly the territory's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, estimated at approximately 20 MtCO2e/year thanks to the definition of decarbonization trajectories (planned to be finalized in 2025). It is made up of core studies (to bring out scenarios of decarbonization, estimate potential and define structuring projects to launch) and support studies (which deepen and complete the basic studies). Study 26 is one of the core studies.

The purpose of the CCS pre-feasibility study was to:

  1. Establish a CCS deployment plan in the region: mapping of CO2 sources of interest to CCS, and infrastructures that could be available to transport CO2 in the region (pipeline, road, rail, barge, ship), geological storage opportunities nearby (offshore Mediterranean, onshore around Lacq, storage with a third party).
  2. Pre-size the necessary infrastructure and estimate the cost and carbon impact of the CCS chain
  3. Identify actions to be implemented to achieve this plan.
