Project description
In this project, Carbon Limits assessed the potential for natural gas decarbonization in Ukraine, using CCUS and development of Blue H2 for switching from natural gas use to Blue H2 use. Using literature review and interviews with stakeholders, techno-economic assessment, source-sink matching and case studies on Blue H2 formed the core part of the project. The following tasks were done to develop the final report for Ukraine:
- Source-sink matching of CO2 emitters and locations suitable for CO2 storage. Facilities emitting more than 100 kt CO2 per year were considered and storage sites capacities were calculated. Sources and sinks were mapped along with the natural gas pipelines and distance from shore.
- Estimating mitigation potential and cost of fuel switching to gas with CCUS and CCUS on existing fuel use.
- Assessing the current use of hydrogen in some industrial sectors (ammonia production, refinery, petrochemicals); and obtaining abatement potential from blue H2 and the cost of blue H2 implementation in the industry.
