2ndLifeCO2 - Reuse of Existing Infrastructure for CO2 Transport and Storage

Project description
The reuse of existing infrastructure (pipelines, installations, wells) is often mentioned as an option to reduce the costs associated with Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) deployment. The client wanted to receive an overview of:
- the potential to reuse the oil and gas infrastructure in the North Sea for CO2 storage on the Norwegian Continental Shelf;
- the economic and environmental benefits and;
- the challenges and R&D gaps associated with the reuse of surface and subsurface infrastructure for CCS.
As part of the project, the team did a systematic review of the existing infrastructure to estimate which infrastructure would be available for CO2 transport. The team also had to identify which CO2 sources in Northern Europe could be interested in storing their CO2 on the Norwegian Continental Shelf and benefit from the reuse of an infrastructure, assessed pipeline capacities, and ship alternatives, assessed CO2 storage potential of aquifers and depleted fields, reviewed costs, as well as carbon footprint of different transport options. Workshops were organized to identify research gaps in the reuse field.
