The study was carried with the objective of analyzing the cost-effective technologies available to eliminate methane release from pneumatic controller as major emission source. The key objectives were presentation of zero-bleed technologies that are currently available on market, discussion of the applicability and the technical barriers to the implementation of these technologies and estimation of the costs of implementation and the resulting abatement costs (in USD/tCO2eq or in USD/tVOC) both for new installation and for retrofits.
These objectives were achieved by i. conducting a thorough literature review and experience sharing from experts, ii. interviewing with a number of stakeholders in particular technology providers and O&G companies, iii. construction of a cost benefit analysis model and iv. Preparation of a public report.
The study found that these technologies have evolved considerably over the past decade and are now available and actively in use in oil and gas fields in the United States and Canada. Two technologies are mature, proven, and in relatively wide use, and as we discuss in this report, these technologies provide a cost-effective way to eliminate emissions of methane and other pollutants from pneumatic controllers.
