The European Commission identified the need for an assessment of methane emissions and for the development of a potential EU strategic plan for methane and commissioned a study titled “Limiting methane emissions in the energy sector”. The project was led by Wood and delivered together with TNO (The Netherlands Organisation for applied scientific research), Carbon Limits and The Sniffers.
The main objective of this project was to develop a robust data and knowledge base on EU methane emissions. More specifically, the project aimed to consolidate methane emissions data, measurement and estimation methodologies in the EU. Furthermore, the aim was to perform methane emission measurements in EU countries in order to fill gaps in reliable data, to develop a methane measurement methodology to monitor current and future methane emissions, to assess existing policy and industry measures, and to develop policy recommendations for an EU strategic plan on methane.
