CDM: Partial Fuel Switch to alternative fuels in a cement plant in Nigeria

Carbon Limits has provided support to Carbon Limits Nigeria their client Lafarge WAPCO cement company to obtain CDM registration for a project to partially replace fossil fuels used in pyro-processing in two cement kilns in Nigeria with lower carbon alternative fuels, primarily biomass residue. The Ewekoro and Sagamu facilities began operations 50 and 33 years ago, respectively. Both plants have always relied exclusively on fossil fuels for the kilns, principally natural gas delivered by the Nigerian National Gas Company (NGC). The project aims at reducing GHG emissions in Nigeria, and represents a “first-of-its-kind” project for commercial use of alternative fuels by a major industrial user in Nigeria.
Carbon Limits has supported development of project documentation, including developing a monitoring plan for the two facilities and the related biomass residue value chains. The project obtained CDM registration on 18 December 2012 (P.no. 8747); see http://cdm.unfccc.int/Projects/DB/ERM-CVS1355402819.14/view for more information.
