Black carbon and methane emissions from oil and gas activities: Overcoming emission reduction barriers

A key objective of this work, financed by the Norwegian Ministry of Environment, has been to identify measures to accelerate emission reduction efforts in this sector. Empirical evidence suggests that substantial emission reductions can be achieved within oil and gas industry with positive returns or at no cost for the investors, however mitigation efforts so far have been modest due to various barriers.
The final report touches upon both the factors preventing achievement of desired outcome, as well as the measures to reduce their negative impact. Over 25 institutions were interviewed as part of the analysis, including oil and gas companies (environmental advisors), regulatory authorities, technology providers and researchers, international organisations, environmental NGOs and national/regional government agencies.
